Presentation Title:

Exploring preschool children's knowledge on health in rural areas

Abstract

The National Preschool Curriculum Standard (Kurikulum Standard Preschool Kebangsaan, KSPK) emphasizes the importance of health care in terms of physical development and health practices within the Physical and Aesthetic Development Strand. While teachers introduce hygiene practices to children, the extent to which these practices become part of their daily routines remains uncertain. This study investigates the knowledge of preschool children in rural areas regarding health, with a focus on implementing a health module and exploring the children's understanding of health concepts such as Handwashing, Toothbrushing, Drink Water, Healthy and Unhealthy Food. The study employs a qualitative research design, using a case study approach. Data collection methods include observation checklists, semi-structured interviews, and diary records/video recordings. The study involves a single preschool class in Sik, Kedah, with 16 children around six years old. A sample of six children was selected from this class for data collection. The researcher will implement the health module over a 12-week period and is still ongoing. The findings are expected to reveal significant insights into the children’s health knowledge. Preliminary observations suggest that the health module has a positive impact on the children’s understanding and daily application of health practices such as proper handwashing with soap, brushing teeth after meals and before bed, maintaining adequate daily water intake, consuming nutritious foods, and reducing the intake of sugary foods. Detailed analysis of the data will provide a comprehensive understanding of children’s knowledge on health and its potential for broader application in similar educational settings.
