Ayurvedic Dietary Practices for Pediatric Oral Health: An Evidence-Based Review
Abstract
Background: Childhood oral diseases remain prevalent, and dietary habits significantly influence oral health. Ayurveda promotes balanced nutrition, seasonal foods, mindful eating, and herbal remedies that may complement preventive pediatric dentistry.
Aim: To highlight the role of Ayurvedic dietary modification and traditional practices in promoting oral health among children.
Methods: This narrative review integrates Ayurvedic dietary principles with evidence from recent clinical and laboratory studies evaluating their effects on dental caries, oral hygiene, salivary pH, and oral microflora.
Results: Ayurvedic practices, including balanced diets, reduced snacking, seasonal fruits, herbal oral hygiene, and oil pulling, showed potential benefits in maintaining oral health. Herbal preparations demonstrated antimicrobial activity, while Arimedadi oil improved salivary pH in special children, supporting the preventive role of Ayurveda in pediatric dentistry.
Conclusion: Ayurvedic diet modification offers a holistic and culturally acceptable adjunct to conventional preventive dentistry. Further well-designed clinical trials are needed to establish standardized recommendations.
