Title: Characterization of Post-COVID-19 manifestations among Ukrainian children
Introduction: Long-term health sequelae of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are a major public health concern. Knowledge about post-acute COVID-19 syndrome (post-COVID) among children is still limited.
Objectives: aimed to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of the post?COVID syndrome among children from Ukraine.
Materials and methods: A retrospective study was performed by collecting data from questionnaires of 270 pediatric patients from different regions of Ukraine aged 6 to 18 years 12 weeks after laboratory-confirmed Covid-19, in a period March – May 2021.
Results: More than one third (36,3 %) of all patients do not have manifestation after recovery from the Covid-19. The most common symptoms of post?COVID syndrome were fatigue 71,5 % (n=123), cough 56 % (n=98), sleep disturbance 40,6% (n=70), depression 26,16 % (n=45), concentration difficulties 18,6% (n=32), anosmia 15,1 % (n=26), ageusia 8,1% (n=14). Children aged 12-14 years prevailed (n=97) - 36% compared to the other age groups. Three and more symptoms of post?COVID syndrome had 32 children (18,6%). Pre-existing comorbidities were detected in 30,2 % (n=52) of children; the most common were chronic tonsillitis 31 cases (18,0%), atopic dermatitis 8 children (10,4%), allergic rhinitis 11 patients (6,32%).
Conclusions: Our study reveals that post?COVID syndrome is also present in the pediatric patients. Profound understanding the spectrum of the post?COVID syndrome is essential for appropriate
management of all its long?term effects. Detailed multidisciplinary follow-up of patients in the post-recovery period from Covid-19 is relevant.
