Morphometeric study of fetal renal anomalies

Abstract

Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) comprise a wide spectrum of disorders ranging from simple variants with no clinical significance to complex anomalies that may lead to severe complications and end-stage renal disease.

A cross-sectional study of a total of 280 aborted foetuses was autopsied. The incidences of urinary anomalies which were related to the renal parenchyma, the pelvi-ureteral system. Changes in gross anomalies and microanatomy were recorded in different gestational age groups in both genders and associated anomalies with other systems.

Ninety-four of the 280 foetuses detected with CAKUTs, 33.57% incidence. Polycystic kidney, hydronephrosis and duplicated ureter were among ureteral defects were common anomalies. gestational age of 16–32 weeks (36.07%) with male (58.3%) foetuses are affected predominantly. Anomalies are commonly unilateral and the most common association with congenital heart disease (8.5%) noted.

This study will help in an early postnatal correct renal diagnosis. And management could be planned to minimize adverse outcomes. As therapeutic termination or the postnatal management requirement to avoid the high rate of morbidity associated with these malformations.
